The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) as signed into law, attempting to be interpreted and carried forward by an understaffed CPSC, will make it illegal for parents to resell their gently used kid’s gear thru any venue, come February 10^th.  It is also set to abruptly put hundreds of thousands of Americans out of work and close many small and medium sized US businesses. The potential environmental impacts are staggering. The ability of financially strapped parents to provide clothing for their growing children will be severely limited.

Yet, despite the increasing furor being unleashed on the internet, in calls and letters of protest to Congress and the media to pay attention by a wide range of affected industries, silence and inaction reigns. Mention child safety and lead and everyone runs the other way. Apparently, it’s simply too hot an issue to handle.

The broad scope of the complicated law, and it’s interpretation by CPSC has effectively made it illegal for parents to resell their children’s clothing and gear at a garage sale, on eBay, Craig’s List, through consignment stores or annual children’s consignment sales. If donated to a nonprofit like Goodwill or Salvation Army, those organizations can’t legally resell it, as of February 10^th. That’s right. Hand-me-down clothing for kid’s age 12 and under will be illegal to resell. It will be a banned hazardous product. The fines of $100,000, potential jail time and label as a felon for violations are stiff.

Without effective venues for parents to pass along their kid’s gently used items where does Congress think this massive amount of consumer product is going to quickly end up?  Landfills here it comes!

Yohoo! Is anybody with the power to do something out there? Does anybody, but those affected, care?

A Back-to-School Bonanza beginning Friday, July 18th!

The friendly folk that work so hard at WExchange Thrift kept all our customers that are parents and grandparents -that- help in since early spring. Yep, they've been sorting and storing as much great back-to-school clothing, shoes and 'gear' as they possibily had room for in their small storage area. Now it's exploding!

It's time for a big bonanza sale!

Shoes, sweaters, hoodies, pants, jeans, tops, school uniforms from some local schools, coats....all included in this fabulous sale.

Eat your Wheaties Saturday morning. Come on down! We open at 10AM sharp. Put your cash or credit/debit cards (no checks) in your pocket, lock your purse in the car. Keep those hands free! Then come dig in! Only $12 a bag! That's a lot of kid's clothes!

The Rules

You must watch your own bag. The staff will be too busy to do this for you.

Only loose KIDS clothes in the window and dump tables are eligible for the sale

Your bag will be repacked at the counter. Please don't be offended. We do this with everyone's bag.

Be Nice! This is a FUN event. No pushing, showving or arguing please. There's plenty for everyone! 

Did you know? As the temperatures have risen into the 90's the last few days, the less intrepid,  generous souls amongst us have been driven indoors. Bored I suppose, they've thankfully taken the opportunity to reorganize themselves - and send dear husband, friend, unwilling teenager or significant other off to us with their stuff.
